Scoliosis

Chiropractic Care for Scoliosis in Joliet

Scoliosis is a physical condition that occurs when the spine has an irregular curvature. The human spine should naturally have three curves that form a subtle letter "S" when viewed from the side, but a person with scoliosis will have a lateral curve greater than 10 degrees, thus resulting in either a "C" or "S" figure from the front and not the side. If you're suffering from scoliosis, get in touch with our chiropractor at ANEW Medical and Rehabilitation in Joliet.

Symptoms of Scoliosis

The spinal curvature caused by scoliosis will typically result in uneven shoulders, waist, or hips and may sometimes result in clear rib protrusions in the lower back. In addition to these outward physical signs, a person with scoliosis will typically have poor balance and pain in their upper body caused by their body incorrectly carrying their weight. Left untreated for too long, scoliosis can lead to a number of health issues, including degenerative disc disease that can interfere with normal nerve functions.

Types of Scoliosis

There are four primary types of scoliosis:

  • Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis. This is the most common type of scoliosis, accounting for as much as 75% of all known cases and occurring in an estimated 2-3% of all adolescents. This form of scoliosis typically appears between the ages of 10 and 15 years-old.
  • Congenital Scoliosis. This type of scoliosis begins before birth and is the result of bone abnormalities. As a child grows, the malformed vertebrae will become more apparent as the spine grows in the wrong direction.
  • Degenerative Scoliosis. This type of scoliosis occurs in adults who previously had a normal spine. As such, it can be difficult to treat in time, as the adult spine is more rigid and less open to spinal manipulations, but an experienced Joliet chiropractor can still help. This type of scoliosis is commonly seen as the result of a traumatic injury, osteoporosis, or a symptom caused by surgery.
  • Neuromuscular Scoliosis.  This type of scoliosis is most likely to continue to progress with age and is caused by paralysis, paraplegia, or by a more serious neurological deficit. For example, neuromuscular scoliosis is commonly seen in adults with cerebral palsy.

Manage Pain and Relieve Discomfort Through Chiropractic Adjustments

Those with scoliosis often experience pain and discomfort as a result of their condition. Seeing your local Joliet chiropractor is an excellent way of managing that pain and relieving yourself of discomfort. A chiropractor is trained in how to deliver gentle, non-invasive adjustments that gradually reduce joint restrictions and spinal misalignments that reduce inflammation and improve joint mobility.
