What's the Difference Between a Headache and Migraine?

Before you seek treatment from our chiropractor, it's important to distinguish between the two. A headache is usually caused by issues with tense muscles in the neck and is a milder form of a migraine. By very definition, a migraine is a severe headache that last for up to three days.

Migraines can be associated with similar causes of headache such as stress, muscle tension, and injuries such as car accidents and whiplash. Migraines are also associated with more severe symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light, and severe pain.

What Causes Headache and Migraine?

Both headaches and migraines can be caused by previous injuries as well as stress and muscle tension. One of the most common causes is tension of the upper back muscles and muscle inflammation compressing on the optic nerve. This is known as a neuralgia headache, and it can be effectively treated with the help of a chiropractor. Other issues that may cause headaches include spinal misalignment, poor posture, eye strain, and radiating neck pain, among others.

How Can a Chiropractor Help with Pain Relief?

Our chiropractor will conduct a physical exam to determine the root cause of your neck pain. Using effective chiropractic care techniques such as gentle spinal adjustments and muscle massages, you may start to feel relief from headache and migraine in as little as two to three treatment sessions. Our chiropractor will help determine what treatment sessions you will need and whether your headache and migraine are due to muscular or skeletal causes.
