Back To School: Neck, Back, and Shoulder Pains
When it is time to go back to school, along with studying and tests is the possibility of shoulder pain from backpacks, neck pain from looking down at schoolwork, and back pain from sitting for long durations of time. At the first signs of pain, contact our chiropractor at ANEW Medical and Rehabilitation. Here are some tips to help you minimize the chance of discomfort from school activities.
When backpacks, duffel bags, or purses are used to carry books and other school items, shoulder pain from excessive weight is a possibility. Be sure not to overstuff bags and use a locker to contain extra books and materials until they are needed. Carrying items in the arms as well as in a bag will also help to distribute the weight so your back and shoulders suffer.
Many students find they suffer from neck pain as they are looking at paperwork, books, and electronic devices constantly. When the weight of your head is pushed forward, the back of the neck becomes stretched. This may lead to neck pain if it is stretched for long durations of time. Consider using a holder for materials to keep them at eye level. Look up from your schoolwork often to help keep your back from rounding and your neck from stretching.
When there is a need to sit in a chair for a long period of time, your legs, back, and shoulders may become sore. When you are allotted time to get up from your chair, do so and walk around slowly while stretching your limbs. If you must remain seated, shift your weight every few minutes to keep your blood circulating as necessary. Stretch your arms and legs in place as well.
