While you work from home it’s important to keep proper computer ergonomics in mind to maintain a healthy posture. Proper ergonomics can prevent back and joint pain. If you are experiencing pain, you may need to visit a chiropractor. If you live in Joliet or the surrounding communities, we hope you choose ANEW Medical and Rehabilitation.
Using a real desk is going to be important. However, if you are working from a makeshift desk, make sure that it’s not causing any posture problems. Your desk should fit your thighs, feet, and knees comfortably underneath and you don’t have to scrunch up. You also want to make sure that no matter what desk you choose, you have the right height. Some desks will let you adjust the height but if you don’t have one, use a box or books to raise your work surface so that it’s comfortable and you get the right posture.
Laptops aren’t very ergonomic but you can make it more comfortable with the placement of the screen and keyboard. Depending on how many computer monitors you have, you will need to keep them at different points on the desk. The monitor should be slightly below your eye level so your neck is in the right position to prevent headaches. The monitor should be at least one arm’s length from you so you can view the entire screen at once.
The only way to get proper keyboard ergonomics is to place it at elbow height. Your wrist should remain straight and upper arms should be close to your body so it doesn’t feel forced. You don’t want to overreach or have it too close to you. If you are using a mouse then you should be able to reach for it easily without overextending any part.
If you have an adjustable office chair, that will be helpful for back pain, but you still need to make sure it’s adjusted correctly. You need something that will support your spine’s natural shape and your feet should be flat on the floor. You may need to get creative as you adjust your chair and readjust your keyboard and monitors.
