Lower back pain is notoriously difficult to treat. Each patient who walks in the door has a different body, and a different lower back pain cause and experience. Traditional medicine has a long list of treatment options for lower back pain, but as studies in the Journal of the American Medical Association have shown, chiropractic care offers a different and effective approach to lower back pain care.
Chiropractic care works to manually realign the spine and adjacent joints, allowing inflammation in the tissues to be reduced as each joint heals itself. This gives the adjoining muscles relief and reduces pressure on the nerves as they exit the spine. This improves the range of motion of each joint. Chiropractic targets not just the site of the pain, but all of the adjacent joints and tissues, helping to re-balance the way the body moves and reducing pain and inflammation there, too. This whole-body, holistic approach can be used alone, or in conjunction with traditional medicine, to make headway against this common problem.
The first chiropractic visit involves a patient history, a chiropractic exam, possibly with x-rays, and MRI, or laboratory tests, with diagnosis and treatment plan. Patients should not be afraid to ask questions so that they understand their treatment plan and the reasons for each step. A good chiropractor works to achieve the most pain relief and normal function with the least number of treatments. An average of one to three visits every two to four weeks is necessary for lower back pain. Treatment visits usually include soft tissue relaxation using massage, ultrasound, electrotherapy, or traction, and then the chiropractic adjustment itself. The chiropractor typically offers advice on ergonomics and nutrition and gives the patient exercises to assist with muscle strength and joint stability.
